How to prepare your children for family photos is one of the most common questions I receive as a family photographer in Zug and Zurich. And it’s completely normal to feel a little anxious about how your kids will behave on the big day! Whether it’s shy smiles, bursts of energy, or the occasional meltdown, I’ve seen it all—and I promise, a bit of preparation makes a big difference.
Here are my five expert tips to help you create a relaxed, joyful, and truly memorable family photo experience.
Sleep is everything! A well-rested child is more likely to be happy, playful, and cooperative. Schedule your session at a time when your little one is naturally energetic. For toddlers, mornings are often best—unless you’re aiming for golden hour light, and they can stay up a bit later. A rested child is a content child, and that sets the tone for your whole session.
f you’re bringing a baby or toddler, we’ll begin with cuddly, comforting moments in your arms. Hugs, gentle rocking, and warm embraces help your child feel safe and ease into the session. Starting this way builds confidence and makes it easier to transition into more interactive and playful moments later.
One of my favorite tricks? Music and movement! Have your child’s favorite song on your phone, or be ready to dance, play, or blow bubbles together. These little moments spark real joy and connection—which leads to the most authentic photos. Think less posing, more playing!
Kids love to feel prepared. A few days before the session, talk to them about what to expect. Say something like, “We’re going to have fun together while someone takes our photos!” Let them help choose between two outfits or pick a favorite toy to bring. Involving them turns nerves into excitement.
Perfection isn’t the goal—connection is. Trust that I’ll gently guide you through the session and adapt to your child’s energy. Whether your little one is shy, wild, or somewhere in between, I have plenty of ways to make them feel comfortable. Often, the most cherished images come from the in-between moments when everyone is simply being themselves.
Remember, knowing how to prepare your children for family photos is the first step toward a relaxed and joyful session. With just a little planning and trust, your children will feel comfortable—and your images will become lasting memories full of love.
