Key Takeaways

The short answer to what to expect from a family portrait session in Porto, before the detail:

• A family portrait session in Porto lasts 45 minutes, and those minutes are full.
• Nobody is posed. I direct you through activities, so you always know what to do.
• We decide the time together on a 20 minute online meeting, based on your family dynamic.
• With small children I usually suggest very early morning in the city, before the tourists.
• Your full gallery arrives within 5 business days, ready to download immediately.

Most families are not nervous about the photos. They are nervous about the four year old.

Will she run off. Will everyone look stiff. Will this feel like a dentist appointment with nicer light.

That is the real question underneath a family portrait session in Porto, so here is the whole thing, start to finish, the way it actually goes.

What to Expect From a Family Portrait Session in Porto, From Start to Finish

A session here has four parts, and none of them involve anyone being told to say cheese. This is the shape of a family portrait session in Porto, from your first email to the gallery landing in your inbox:

• a 20 minute online meeting, where we decide the time, the place and how your family works
• planning, three to four weeks ahead, six to eight in summer
• the session, 45 minutes, at the hour we chose together
• your full gallery, within 5 business days, downloadable straight away

The rest is detail, and detail is what makes a family portrait session in Porto feel easy.

Before Your Family Portrait Session in Porto

Most of the work happens before I pick up the camera, and almost none of it lands on you.

It starts with a 20 minute online meeting. We talk about your children, their ages, who needs warming up and who will be gone the second we arrive somewhere interesting. Your family dynamic decides the plan, not a template.

Then we choose a location together, matched to your family rather than to a list of pretty backdrops. My guide to the best places for family photos in Porto walks through the five I return to most.

Outfits come last, and they are simpler than people fear. Soft colours, fabrics that move, nothing with a logo. The rest is in what to wear for a family photo session in Porto.

Choosing the Time of Day

The hour of a family portrait session in Porto is not fixed in advance. We decide it on the call, because the right time depends entirely on your family.

With babies and small children I usually suggest very early morning. Young children are at their best before the day wears them down, and in the city the difference is bigger than people expect: at 8am Ribeira belongs to you, and by 11am it belongs to tour groups. Empty streets are worth more than perfect light.

Older children hold up later in the day, so those sessions often sit in the evening instead.

I watch IPMA, the Portuguese weather institute from three days out. Rain moves a session. Cloud does not.

If You Are Travelling to Porto

Families arriving from abroad usually ask for day one. I ask for day two or three.

Jet lag is visible on faces, and the first day goes on finding the apartment and the nearest pastelaria. By the second morning everyone has slept, which matters more here than usual, because the early start is often the whole point. If your dates are tight, how to book your family photoshoot in Porto covers lead times.

How I Direct a Family Portrait Session in Porto

This is the part that surprises people most, so it is worth saying plainly: you will never be left standing there wondering what to do.

We meet, we say hello, and then we walk. I talk to the children first, and within a couple of minutes they decide I am not interesting, which is exactly what I want. Some of the best frames come from those minutes, before anyone has decided how to stand.

Then the activities start. I do not pose families and I do not leave you to improvise either. I give you something to do together, with each other, while I move around you. The photos come out of the activity, not out of an instruction about where to put your hands.

I have spent more than twelve years photographing children, and that is really what you are hiring. I know when a three year old is about to be done, when to swap the activity, and when the shy one is finally ready.

Here is what those 45 minutes usually hold:

• walking together, the spine of the session, because families look like themselves when they move
• activities I direct, small things you do with each other rather than for the camera
• the children alone, a few minutes while the parents step out of frame
• each parent with each child, because those photos rarely exist otherwise
• two or three still frames at the end, when nobody is bracing

Nobody is asked to smile at me. Real expressions come from the people beside you, not from the person holding the camera.

If a toddler refuses everything, we change the activity and move on. That is not the session going wrong. That is a Tuesday with a two year old, and it makes good pictures.

After Your Family Portrait Session in Porto

The waiting is the part people ask about most, so I keep it short and predictable.

Your full gallery from a family portrait session in Porto arrives within 5 business days. Private link, high resolution, and you can download everything immediately. If you are here on holiday, the photos usually reach you before your trip is over.

From the same gallery you can order prints, albums and other products through my online print shop, so nothing sits on a hard drive for three years waiting for you to decide.

Editing stays quiet. Colour is corrected, skin is left alone. Photos where you recognise yourself and the reality.

If This Feels Right

In a year you will not remember the schedule. You will remember your son running ahead on an empty street, and everyone laughing at the same second.
