Family Photo Session in Porto: What to Wear

BLOG
Key Takeaways
- Colour and fabric decide almost everything about what to wear for a family photo session in Porto.
- Dress one adult first, usually the mother, then build the family inside those colours.
- Texture does the work colour is not allowed to do. Knit, linen, wool, raw cotton.
- Warm neutrals with one soft colour on top. That is the whole formula, and it holds up against Porto granite and Atlantic light.
- Evenings stay cool even after a hot August day. Bring one layer per person.
- Roll outfits in the suitcase and hang them the night before.
It is usually the night before. The suitcase is open, the children are asleep, and you are holding a striped shirt against a floral dress, trying to work out which one is wrong.
I have met families who lost an evening of their holiday to that.
What you wear for a family photo session in Porto matters in exactly two places. Colour, and fabric. Here is what I tell families before we shoot, and why the answer is different here.
Where to Start Before a Family Photo Session in Porto
The fastest way through this is to stop dressing five people and start dressing one.
Choose the outfit you already feel good in. In most families that is the mother’s, the one decided last and worried about most. Pull two or three colours out of it, then dress everyone else inside that range.
Coordinate, do not match. Five people in white shirts and jeans read as a uniform. The same five in cream, oatmeal, soft blue and warm grey read as a family.
Four things pull attention away from your faces during a family photo session in Porto, and I would leave them in the suitcase:
- large logos, slogans and cartoon characters
- neon, which throws colour onto skin in evening light
- bright white near the Douro, where the water reflects and the fabric blows out
- brand new shoes on children who walked the city all day
Colours That Work in Porto
Porto has a palette of its own and it is a quiet one. Grey granite, blue and white tile, ochre plaster, the brown of the Douro, pale sand at the coast. Outfits near those tones belong here. Outfits that fight them look pasted on.
The formula I send every family is the one you already see in my work. Warm neutrals as the base, one soft colour on top. Cream, oatmeal, sand, taupe, camel, chocolate brown, then a single quiet colour and nothing louder.
Three palettes I suggest most often for a family photo session in Porto, each tied to a place I photograph:
Granite and Garden
For the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and the parks above the river: cream, oatmeal, soft sage, olive, faded denim. Let the garden carry the colour.
Sand and Sea
For the Gaia beaches, including Praia dos Salgueiros: ivory, sand, taupe, dusty blue, pale terracotta. Long dresses, rolled trousers, bare feet.
Tile and Old Town
For the streets and stairs near Ribeira, and for autumn and winter: camel, chocolate brown, cream, deep burgundy, charcoal. The tiles are already patterned, so keep the clothes plain and let a good coat carry the outfit.
Texture, When Everything Is Neutral
When the colours are this quiet, texture keeps the photos from going flat. Knit, linen, wool, corduroy, raw cotton. A cream knit and a cream cotton shirt are not the same photograph.

Fabric, and the Wind Nobody Warns You About
Porto sits on the Atlantic, and from May to September a north wind called the nortada arrives most afternoons. It is why evenings feel cool here even after a hot day.
That wind is not a problem. It is one of the reasons the photos move. But it decides your fabric.
Choose something with somewhere to go: linen, cotton, light knits, anything with drape. Long skirts and dresses beat stiff shapes, because they show the wind instead of resisting it.
What struggles is structured jackets, stiff synthetics, and anything you hold down with one hand. If you cannot lift a child in it, do not wear it.
I watch IPMA, the Portuguese weather institute from three days out and tell you if anything needs changing.
What to Wear by Season in Porto
The city runs milder than visitors expect, so outfit advice written in Boston or Zurich does not fit. How each season behaves for a family photo session in Porto:
- Spring, March to May. Light layers and a cardigan someone can carry. Soft neutrals against all that green.
- Summer, June to September. Linen and bare arms, plus a layer each for after sunset, which falls near 9pm.
- Autumn, October and November. The warmest light of the year. Knits, boots, camel and rust and cream.
- Winter, December to February. Mild and wet, around 14 degrees. The coat becomes the outfit, so choose one you like.
Packing Outfits for a Family Photo Session in Porto
Most families arrive with one suitcase each and a session on day two or three, so packing well matters more than shopping well. What I send travelling families:
- roll the outfits instead of folding them
- hang everything the night before in the bathroom while someone showers
- one spare top per child, because gelato happens
- shoes that are already worn in
- skip the outfit that only works if nobody sits on the ground
Questions Families Ask Before a Family Photo Session in Porto
Do we all have to match for a family photo session in Porto?
No. Choose one colour family and let everyone sit inside it. Matching outfits read as a uniform, and the eye goes to the clothes instead of the faces.
What colours should we avoid for a family photo session in Porto?
Neon, large logos and bright white near the river. Neon reflects onto skin in evening light, and white blows out against water and pale stone. Cream instead of white solves it.
What should I wear as the mother?
Something you already own and feel good in, with a shape that moves. If you keep adjusting it in the fitting room, you will keep adjusting it during the session.
What do children wear for a beach session in Gaia?
Simple cotton, rolled trousers or a light dress, and no shoes. Sand ends up everywhere anyway, so bring a spare top. You can see one of those evenings in a family session at Salgueiros beach.
If This Feels Right
In a year you will not remember which shirt you chose. You will remember your daughter’s hair going sideways in the wind, and everyone laughing at the same second.
That is what I am after. Photos where you recognise yourself and the reality.
If you are planning a family photo session in Porto and want help with outfits before you pack, write me with your dates and your children’s ages. I answer every message myself.
